Annette Funicello had just turned thirteen when Walt Disney, the studio's head of production, saw her performing in the Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. Much to the enmity of her Mickey Mouse Club co-stars, Funicello was added to the cast in the series's debut season. She was not even obliged to take part in auditions. Disney did the right thing in making the decision as Funicello quickly became the star of The Mickey Mouse Club. Additionally, she wrote an original adventure tale titled Adventures in Dairyland. Funicello needed to record records to maximize her star ability. Annette was not very enthusiastic about singing and Disney enlisted Tutti camerata as her manager, to help guide her as an artist. Funicello grew to love recordings and collaborated with Camerata who was among the only forty-something arranging professionals of this time who was aware of the basics of early music. Annette Sings Anka is the album that marked the beginning of her progress. It could be the first LP featuring a rock songwriter. Funicello starred as a character in Beach Party the first of five extremely popular film about beach parties, typically featuring Frankie Avalon although produced by AIP, the scripts of each of the films were personally reviewed and approved by Walt Disney in order to ensure that Annette's image was kept clean and squeaky clean.
